Whitchurch was originally founded as a Roman settlement in around 70AD and called Mediolanum meaning “Midfield” or “Middle of the Plain”.

There’s not too much evidence of the Roman occupation today, however the Whitchurch Heritage Centre has Roman and Iron Age artefacts evidencing Whitchurch’s early history.

Whitchurch was granted ‘town’ status in 1284 and awarded a market charter in the 14th century. Today there’s still a vibrant market every Friday.
